Major Crimes

 

These are criminal acts or charges that, if proven by the government, expose an individual to a serious and extended term of imprisonment.  These offenses may be separated into 3 distinct groups:

Crimes Against Persons

These are criminal acts in which the Government alleges a person has been injured or harmed by the acts of another. Although this list is not conclusive, common crimes in this category include:

  • Assault
  • Kidnapping
  • Forcible rape or sodomy
  • Statutory rape or sodomy
  • Domestic assault
  • Vehicular assault
  • Assault on a law enforcement officer
  • Voluntary and involuntary manslaughter
  • Vehicular manslaughter
  • Elder abuse
  • Endangering the welfare of a child

 

Crimes Involving the Property of Another Person

These are criminal acts in which the Government alleges a person has unlawfully taken, possessed, or tampered with the property of another. Common crimes in this category include:

  • Robbery
  • Arson
  • Burning
  • Tampering
  • Burglary
  • Stealing
  • Receiving Stolen Property
  • Forgery
  • Fraudulent use of a credit device
  • Property destruction

 

Weapon Offenses

These are criminal acts in which the Government alleges an individual has either unlawfully used a weapon or used a weapon in the commission of a criminal act. Common crimes in this category include:

  • Armed criminal action
  • Possession or sale of an unlawful weapon
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Exhibition or threatening an individual with a deadly weapon
  • Possession or discharge of a weapon while intoxicated
  • Discharging a weapon from a motor vehicle

 

Driving While Intoxicated and Other Related Public Safety Offenses

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol
  • Driving under the influence of drugs
  • Vehicular assault involving intoxication by alcohol or drugs
  • Vehicular assault involving intoxication by alcohol or drugs
  • Leaving the Scene of an accident

 

Drug Related Offenses

  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Distribution or sale of a controlled substance
  • Manufacture or production of a controlled substance
  • Possession of chemicals with intent to create a controlled substance
