Gary M. Wilson

Gary M. Wilson graduated summa cum laude from Missouri State University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History. He then attended the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law and received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1986.

After spending a year clerking for the Honorable Judge John Crow at the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District, Mr. Wilson began his legal career in earnest in 1987 by spending three years in the Missouri State Public Defender System. The Public Defender System was a great introduction into the criminal justice system and while there he handled misdemeanor and felony trial cases, post-conviction relief cases and criminal appeals. His early years there offered profound trial litigation experience and Mr. Wilson tried cases to juries for offenses such as felony driving while intoxicated; vehicular assault for driving while intoxicated; vehicular manslaughter for driving while intoxicated; first degree (armed) assault; felony stealing; second degree assault, and unlawful use of a weapon.

In 1990, Mr. Wilson had his first experience with private practice and continued his emphasis on criminal defense law. At this time Mr. Wilson was introduced to the Federal criminal justice system and gained valuable litigation experience in that venue. From 1991 to 1995 Mr. Wilson tried six different cases to juries for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and handled numerous other matters in the Federal Court system. During this period, Mr. Wilson also began actively practicing in the domestic relations field and handled numerous matters including divorce, adoption and modifications. In addition, he handled countless abuse and neglect cases in Juvenile Court, including termination of parental rights cases.

In 1996, Mr. Wilson returned to the Missouri Public Defender System handling major crimes, and remained there through 2000. During this time Mr. Wilson handled extremely serious criminal matters including second degree murder; home invasion robberies; armed robberies and assaults; drug manufacturing and trafficking; and sexual offenses. During this period, Mr. Wilson tried cases to juries for offenses including armed assault and armed criminal action; kidnapping; forcible rape and sodomy; statutory rape and sodomy; possession of controlled substances; and felony driving while intoxicated. In addition to this Mr. Wilson tried a large number of felony court tried cases.

In 2000, Mr. Wilson began his association with the Springfield law firm of Smith, Montgomery and Associates, handling criminal defense cases. While there, Mr. Wilson continued to litigate both misdemeanor and felony criminal cases and obtained acquittals for clients charged with offenses including driving while intoxicated by alcohol; driving under the influence of drugs; felony stealing; second degree assault; misdemeanor and felony possession of controlled substances; stealing by deceit; endangering the welfare of a child; domestic assault; assault of a law enforcement officer; burglary and unlawful use of a weapon. Mr. Wilson left the employ of Smith, Montgomery and Associates in the summer of 2010.
